Haunted Tonopah
Are you fascinated by ghosts and long to visit haunted locations? Tonopah is the place for you!
Paranormal investigators from around the globe flock to Tonopah in search of its famous spirits.
The Mizpah Hotel
Experience the haunted history of Tonopah with a stay at the legendary Mizpah Hotel, where ghost stories come alive. Among its most famous spirits is the mysterious Lady in Red, said to roam the 5th floor and elevator after a tragic end between rooms 502 and 504. Some lucky visitors have even discovered a strand of pearls left behind as her calling card.
The Mizpah’s haunted halls don’t stop there—keep an eye out for playful children on the 3rd floor and echoes of miners in the basement. Don’t forget to visit the front desk for the hotel’s book of ghost stories and photos, and uncover the secrets that continue to enchant brave guests from around the world.
The Tonopah Liquor Company is said to be haunted by George “Devil” Davis, a notorious prankster who loved playing tricks in life—and apparently still does!
Known for his mischievous spirit, George’s playful antics continue to keep visitors on their toes. The TLC is also home to Hattie, a warm and nurturing presence who was once a barmaid and brothel employee. Known for her kindness, especially toward children, Hattie’s gentle spirit adds a comforting touch to the historic establishment.
Visit the Vanwood Variety Store, formerly known as the Golden Block, built in 1902 as Tonopah’s first permanent stone building.
Originally housing the Nye County Bank, the building was constructed by Frank Golden, who was later arrested for embezzlement. Visitors and staff frequently report strange sounds, mysterious breezes, unusual lights, and ghostly voices throughout the day. Legend has it that a former bank employee who died inside the old basement safe is the restless spirit behind the haunting.
Visit the notorious Clown Motel and experience a stay in one of its famously haunted rooms.
Just next door, explore the eerie Old Tonopah Cemetery, where visitors have reported strange noises, mysterious lights, and even full-body apparitions. While there, you can pay your respects at the graves of Bina Verrault and George “Devil” Davis. To learn more about their fascinating stories and find their graves, pick up an Old Cemetery Walking Tour Brochure available at local hotels, museums, and the town office.
